Currently, documents exist for each separate school as they were created prior to consolidation. As we work through a process of review, we will revisit our current practices in light of scope and sequence and make revisions where necessary.

With the State of Maine's adoption of Common Core State Standards for English and Mathematics in the spring of 2011, we have begun the process of reviewing our ELA and Math curricula for alignment to the new standards, standardization of practices and resources across the RSU, and to determine if our current curriculum materials are a match with the standards or if we need to look at new materials.

TextComplexityOn October 26, 2011, the K-8 staff from the RSU met in Veazie to review the ELA standards for Common Core. Specifically, we looked at Reading standard 10: Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently. The day's activities were focused to help participants answer three main questions about text complexity:

  1. Why Does Text Complexity Matter?
  2. What Are the Factors Used to Determine Text Complexity?
  3. How Does Text Complexity Look at My Grade? In My Classroom? At My School?

For more information about CCSS ELA standards, check out corestandards.org. Suggested elementary reading lists can also be found online. There is also a Common Core FAQ regarding reading lists.
