OMS 8th Grade Student Receives Spiegel Award
An Orono Middle School eighth grade student received the Lawrence Alan Spiegel Outstanding Student of the Year Award. This award was presented by Scott Dow, the President of the Board at the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine. The Spiegel Award recognizes students at three grade levels who have produced an exceptional piece of original writing, fiction or non-fiction, or an unusually expressive work of visual or performance art relating to human rights. The award was presented in recognition of the poem the student wrote entitled There’s Always Hope: A Jewish Girl’s Journey Through a Concentration Camp.
NECAP Results
Orono Middle School students performed very well on the 2010 New
England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) testing. All of our mean scaled
school scores in each grade level content area tested were among the top four
scores in Maine. Our mean scaled school scores in 8th grade reading and math
ranked first in the state and our writing score was the second highest in Maine. In
the seventh grade, our scaled school score in reading was the second highest in
Maine and in math our score ranked fourth in the state. OMS sixth graders also
had impressive scaled school scores, ranking third in math and fourth in reading
at the state level.
The following are the percentages of students that scored in the proficient
or proficient with distinction level on the 2010 NECAP testing:

Cheering News
Congratulations to our Cheering Team for finishing second in the
James F. Doughty Invitational Cheering Competition.
Orono Middle School Chess Team News
Congratulations to the Orono Middle School Chess Team for winning the Penobscot Valley Middle League (PVML) Chess Tournament. They also won the PVML regular season title and finished the season undefeated.

We are pleased to report that Schooldigger.com has recently ranked Orono Middle School second out of 175 public middle schools in Maine. Congratulations to our entire middle school community for this outstanding recognition. This is the third consecutive year that OMS has been ranked among the top two public middle schools in Maine by Schooldigger.com.

Orono Middle School Students Excel in the
Nationwide Middle School American Mathematics Competitions
Over 150,000 students participated in the 2010 American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 8. The AMC 8 is a nationwide competition which was held on November 16th at over 2,000 schools and colleges. We are pleased to report that Orono Middle School students who choose to participate in the AMC 8 did very well. One of our sixth graders had the highest sixth grade score in the State of Maine.
Middle School Math Team News
Congratulations to our middle school math team for their outstanding performance in the Eastern Maine Math League Fall Meet. One of our sixth grade teams finished first, one of our seventh grade teams placed second, and our two eighth grade teams earned first place and fourth place in the grade level competitions. Orono Middle School students also did very well in the individual results.
